The Analysis Overview of the Status & Trends of Biodiversity Loss in Belgium was carried out by Cerac in collaboration with the National Geographic Institute (NGI). It was completed in September 2025, drawing on recent literature (2018–2024) and experts’ feedback to feed into the broader first Belgian Climate Risk Assessment (BCRA).

This analysis covers Belgium’s regions: Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels, as well the Belgian share of the North Sea – within European and global biodiversity contexts.

The main goal was to assess the risks biodiversity loss poses to Belgium’s ecosystems, economy, and society. In Belgium, urbanisation, intensive agriculture, pollution, climate change, overexploitation, and invasive species are the main drivers. Biodiversity decline threatens food security, water supply, climate resilience, and health.

The related report mainly reviews biodiversity indicators, monitoring methods, and threats, while identifying data gaps (for instance knowledge gaps on the impacts of climate change on belowground biodiversity).

Recommendations include:

  • harmonised national datasets
  • more predictive models adapted to the Belgian context
  • more research and knowledge sharing on the very transversal soil biodiversity topic
  • and a stronger regional coordination where appropriate.
