Heat waves, floods and droughts: global warming is accelerating and its consequences are increasingly hitting Belgium as well. This boundary is exceeded. Our emissions from energy generation, transport, agriculture and other activities have caused the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to rise well above pre-industrial levels.
The risks for our societies are increasing with every tenth of a degree Celsius of additional warming. Extreme weather events like the devastating floods in the Vesder valley of 2021, the record-breaking heatwaves in Europe of 2023 or the annual increase in wildfires worldwide, are already showing the destructive effects of climate change – even with an actual global average temperature increase of “only” 1.2 degrees Celsius.
This planetary boundary is also exceeded at Belgian level. That means that Belgium already overshoot its “fair share”.
